About the Birkenstock Footbeds
The footbed is made of highly resilient cork, a renewable resource, harvested from Cork Oak trees in Portugal mixed with natural latex from rubber trees in Malaysia. These natural products react to the body’s natural warmth. Over time the footbed yields to the characteristics of the individual foot just as the foot yields to the healthy shape of the contoured footbed.
Firm Footbed – Made of cork and latex, molded to mirror the shape of a healthy foot. Much like a firm mattress, it provides comfort through firm support. It remains flexible and retains its corrective features and support over the long term.
Soft Footbed – Layer of elastic latex foam between the suede sole liner and the cork-latex mixture. Cushions the entire length of the footbed.
Footbed liner – made of the highest quality suede leather. Specially designed to be soft, absorbent and comfortable over long periods of wear.
Strong, natural, jute fibers, sourced from Bangladesh – Wicks moisture away from the foot for superior breathability. Also strengthens the footbed and allows it to be repaired or modified easily.
Birkenstock Uppers, Straps and Soles
Top quality leather uppers, specially tanned to preserve breathability. Dyes are not dyed on but are saturated throughout the entire hide for better durability.
Birko-Flor uppers – High quality air-permeable, skin-friendly yet sturdy artificial felt material. Strong, breathable and easy-care. The top layer is designed with a leather-like texture. The second layer consists of a soft fleece which is very pliable yet robust and wears beautifully.
Soles – Shock absorbing EVA material – lightweight, flexible, shock resistant and replaceable.
Apply Cork Sealant – Birkenstocks have a light coating of sealant to prevent the exposed cork from drying out. If the cork no longer looks shiny, we will apply another thin coat of a flexible sealing material (FREE OF CHARGE). Done periodically, this will prolong the life of your footwear.
Clean & Protect Uppers – Apply water & stain protector (i.e. Tana All Protector) to leather, suede and nubuck uppers before wearing and after each cleaning. Do not spray the footbeds of your sandals as it can make the suede slippery. Keep suede fresh looking with a suede brush. When soiled, use mild soap suds or clean with a commercial suede cleaner (i.e. Tana sandal cleaner). For nubuck, use a Tana nubuck block. Clean and condition leathers with high quality neutral leather creams, use matching leather polish to cover scuff marks. Wipe Birkoflor uppers with a damp cloth.
The inside of the footbed may also be washed with mild soap suds and a soft brush. Dry slowly, away from heat to prevent cracking.
Avoid Extreme Heat! The Birkenstock sole has been carefully selected for its superior qualities. It is lightweight, flexible, durable and shock absorbent. However, both the cork and soles can be damaged by exposure to excessive heat. Keep your sandals away from radiators, fireplaces and campfires. Never leave them in a closed car on a very hot day or on the beach exposed to direct sun.
If your sandals become wet, let them dry slowly, away from direct heat. Exposure to water can cause the straps and soles to separate from the footbed. They may be glued back together with a thin layer of contact cement or brought to a shoe repair shop for repair.
Buckle Loosely – Beginning with the ones closest to your toes, buckle the straps. Birkenstock footwear is designed to be worn loosely. The support comes from the footbed, not from tightly buckled straps. Keeping the straps buckled loosely will allow your feet to lift slightly off the footbed, which in turn permits the air circulation necessary for healthy feet.
Comfort Tips – Adjust to your new sandals gradually, as they may introduce new movements to the muscles in your feet and legs.
Although your sandals may feel rather rigid at first, their flexibility will increase with wear. Leather straps will become more supple, and the footbeds will adjust slightly to your feet.
